The Sunday Currently, #34

Happy Sunday, folks! How’s your weekend going?

Today, we’re finally painting the dining room!  If you follow on Instagram, you may have seen the samples we put up at 11 pm last night.  After a ton of discussion this morning, we’ve decided on a color.  Can you guess which one we chose?

Currently:

Reading– These 15 ways to save on home decor.

Writing– A thank you note.

Listening– To these cocktail party hostess tips the next first time we have a gathering at the house.

Thinking– How much I love the colors in the living room of this Boston townhouse.  The green and navy are just perfect!

Wishing– We had the budget to go ahead and add built ins to our home office.  I love the look of this dark den with built ins and pops of color!

Hoping– To make a chart like this soon.  In the meantime, you can see most of our paint colors here.

Wearing– The Sunday uniform (lately): painting clothes.

Loving– This Pinterest account.

Wanting– To know…how obsessed with design are you?

Needing– To clean our stainless steel appliances.  Here’s some great tips on how to do it.

Feeling– Excited about some pretty fabulous guest bloggers coming to the blog this week!  Y’all are in for a treat!

PS- Totally random, but do you remember when I was trying to decide on hardware for our bathroom vanity? Well I found the perfect ones. Now, I must win the lottery, since what I need would cost me roughly $1,000.  Le sigh.
And in case you missed it this week…

Quotable Friday

preach

Happy Friday, friends!

Today I’m super pumped because I’m planning a pretty major trip to HomeGoods and then a bunch of antique shops this afternoon.  I’m hoping to finally pick up a couple of mirrors for our master bathroom vanity, a couple of baskets, a drape or two, maybe some hardware…who knows. Maybe I’ll find a piece or two for the shop as well. Follow me on Instagram or Twitter to get a sneak peeks at my finds! :)

What’s on your list this weekend?

Dining Room Drama

The other night I decided to play around with a few different “virtual paint” applications on the web.  I’ve always gone with Sherwin-William’s Paint Visualizer (especially for our front door), but I have to say that I’ve officially converted to Benjamin Moore’s Personal Color Viewer.  It really is the best if you have a picture that isn’t absolutely clear on where you want to paint.  A few minutes hours later, I had about 29,837,876 options for our dining room. (Warning: this site is totally addicting!)

I’m just gonna put this out there:  I want drama!  Our house is pretty mellow for the most part, but the dining room is what you really see when you walk in the front door with the crystal chandelier, extra large windows, and massive pocket doors, and I want it to be a show stopper!

Here’s what we know:

  1. We have already decided that we want to do a stencil above the chair rail to add a little excitement in the room.  We’ve chosen the Antoinette damask stencil and the Smoked Oyster stencil creme from Royal Design Studio, which we think will give a similar look to the wallpaper that we picked out and then realized we’d be crazy to spend that money right now!
  2. We want two different colors above and below the chair rail.
  3. The trim is staying glossy white to match the rest of the house.
  4. We don’t want anything too pastel.

Here’s what we’re undecided on:

  1. The wall color in general.
  2. We know we want two different colors above and below the chair rail, but haven’t decided if we want to do two colors that are a shade or two off of each other, or keep below the chair rail Kitten White to tie in to the foyer and mud room.

I chose to use a picture with the fireplace since that’s really the only non-changeable thing in the room.  Below the chair rail is stark white primer, which we will certainly be changing.

There are lots of blues that I like, but Charles really isn’t a fan of blue, and since we’ve used it in several other rooms, I thought I’d skip the blue in here.  So here are a few greens I like, in no particular order.

1. Mystic Lake

2. Yorktowne Green

3. Webster Green

4. Antiqued Aqua

5. Tropical Oasis

When I was playing around, out of nowhere, I decided that I really love purple with the green tiles and dark fireplace trim too.  A couple of favorites:

2. Carter Plum

So yeah, the possibilities really are endless.

Which one is your favorite?

Room by Room Recap – Master Closet

Two Room by Room Recaps in two days?!  I know you’re pumped!!

When we first saw this original master closet, we knew that just wouldn’t work.  Since we knew that we were going to be completely transforming the original kitchenette into the master bathroom, we decided to do a little rearranging.

IMG_2605

This area can be a little confusing if you haven’t seen it in person.  To get a better idea, I drew up these simple before and after plans in Floorplanner.

Before JPEG1 After JPEG1

With the exception of the substituting french doors for the pocket door, we pretty much stuck to this plan.

Here’s the original hall/walk through to the kitchenette (which became our master bathroom).  We knocked out all of the walls on the left here.

IMG_3572

Here’s the “pantry” to the kitchenette.  We closed up this door I’m standing in and knocked out the wall on the left.

IMG_3578 IMG_3579

Ok, you with me?  Let’s get started with the transformation!

Here’s the view at this point from our bedroom:

And from the bathroom:

Ok, back to the closet.

Luckily, we were able to steal a few baseboards and door trim from other places in the house, so all Charles and I had to do was add a little joint compound and nail hole filler to make them cohesive.

What we’ve finished:

  1. Knock out the 3 walls
  2. Close up 2 doors with lathing and plaster
  3. Pull up vinyl in part of the closet
  4. Repair plaster as necessary
  5. Repair floor where walls were removed
  6. Install new baseboards and trim where needed
  7. Install new wall and french doors
  8. Prep, prime, and paint walls, trim, and ceiling
  9. Install closet storage system

What’s left:

  1. Help the floor (see below)
  2. Install a built in closet system
  3. Install new light fixture
  4. Install door hardware

After pulling up the vinyl, we discovered a nasty tar substance had been used.  Due to a limited budget, we decided to oil these floors in a dark stain and leave them for now.  Eventually, I’d like to replace the floor, but a temporary solution will probably be a rug, carpet, or paint.

Our closet “system” is certainly very makeshift right now, but it works for us.  We were hesitant to get anything that would rely solely on the plaster walls for support, so we will probably stick with these units until we can add some built-ins.

You can check out my master closet inspiration here!

The figures…this room is 7′ x 13′ with 10′ ceilings.  There is 1 window and 1 set of french doors.

Room by Room Recap – Foyer & Stairs

It’s been a while since our last Room by Room Recap.  I hope you’re ready for photo overload!! Today, I’m giving you a recap of the transformation of our foyer and stairs.

This room is so large that it has traditionally been used as a living room rather than a foyer.  But with a formal living room and a den downstairs, we didn’t see the point in that, so we decided we’d just have a grand entry instead.  So we took it from dated with green trim, multi-colored walls, and gold carpeting on the stairs to clean and crisp.  Check it out!

What we’ve finished

  1. Repair plaster walls and ceiling
  2. Remove carpet from stairs
  3. Repair and secure stair railing
  4. Prep, prime, and paint walls, trim, and ceiling
  5. Stain stair railing with varnish
  6. Repair minor termite damage in the floor
  7. Install new light fixture in the foyer
  8. Clean and lubricate pocket door tracks
  9. Install alarm system
  10. Paint fireplace inlays
  11. Install new fireplace trim + stain
  12. Hang privacy sheers on the front door and windows

What’s left

  1. Oil and/or refinish the floors
  2. Stain the stairs
  3. Install a stair runner
  4. Install a Nest thermostat (we already have one installed upstairs)
  5. Decorate

We painted the walls in Kitten White and the trim in a high gloss white.  We had minor termite damage (no active termites – yay!!) in the floor, so we went ahead and filled that in to prevent further cracking.  We will eventually get around to oiling and refinishing the floors.

Since you can see all the way through our house and out our back kitchen window when you look through the front door, we definitely needed some privacy added to the front door and windows.  We decided to hang sheers on the outside windows, and my mom made us the perfect taut sheer to cover our door.  They still let plenty of light in, but provide enough privacy that we no longer feel uncomfortable.

This room is in serious need of some decorating.  Right now, it’s kind of serving as a catch-all for furniture and accents that we aren’t sure where to put yet.  You may have noticed the blue painter’s tape in the corner around the brass etagere…we are planning to move the piano into that space and the etagere into the formal living room.  The black dresser is just waiting to be moved upstairs, and we are in serious need of a rug.  But those things will have to wait for now.

You can read more about our plans for the foyer here, and see my inspiration here.

The figures…this room is 13′ x 21′ 6″ with 11′ ceilings.  There are 4 windows, 1 fireplace, 1 exterior door, 5 interior doors, and 1 closet.

DC Bound

Hey strangers! I hope y’all had a great 4th of July and got to spend some time relaxing with family and friends. We sure did!  And thanks for bearing with me as I took a little blogging break last week.  I’m feeling quite refreshed and have some exciting updates to share with you later this week!  But first, a quick question…

The Mr. and I are very excited to be taking a quick little getaway to DC soon, but I need your help!  Where should we eat?  Where should we drink?  Where should we play?  What should we see?

United_States_Capitol_-_west_front

We’ve already nailed down where we’re staying thanks to AirBNB (Georgetown, if you must know).  So now I’d love to hear your tips and must-do’s for the capital.  We’ve seen all the monuments and major attractions, but I haven’t been to DC as an “adult” and would love your suggestions on bars, restaurants, night life, and such.

Colorful Georgetown Row of Houses

Also, I’m totally considering a blow out from here while I’m there.  I’ve been dying to try it, especially since there’s not one in all of NC.  Thoughts?
