Happy Cinco de Mayo, amigos! I hope you had a wonderful weekend!
Today I’m continuing the Room by Room Recap series with the dining room. To be honest, this is one room that had to get A LOT worse before it got better. The 70’s wallpaper and matching pea green trim was a little more than we could handle.
We love the new crisp white trim, but are still trying to decide on a wall color for this room. I originally wanted to go with wallpaper above the chair rail (and still do, eventually), but let me tell you…wallpaper is ‘spensive!! So paint it is!
Take a look…
What we’ve finished
- Repair plaster walls and ceiling
- Repair/replace broken storm windows
- Repair window ropes
- Clean tile fireplace
- Remove wallpaper
- Prep and prime walls and ceiling
- Prep, prime, and paint trim and pocket doors
- Paint fireplace inlay and cover
- Stain trim around fireplace floor tiles
- Repair and clean existing chandelier
What’s left
- Refinish floors
Paint wallsor hang wallpaper- Replace mismatched fireplace tiles.
I’m still trying to decide on a paint color, but I think I want to go with something vibrant. The foyer is off white, so I’d like the dining room to really stand out when you walk in. I’m also considering doing some sort of stencil in there.
I found this runner at HomeGoods and fell in love with it! I’d like to try to pull a color from there for the walls. I also picked up a matching table cloth to make a few pillows for the chairs we plan to put in the bay window.
Lastly, I want to change out the rug, and add drapes and more furniture. I particularly want a large buffet for the long wall. We have also been meaning to add in a leaf or two to the table, but just haven’t gotten around to it. It’s looking a little small without them! You can find more of my dining room inspiration here.
The figures…this room is 17′ 8″ x 15′ 9″ with 11′ ceilings and 3 windows. There are 4 interior doors, including 2 pocket doors, and 1 fireplace.

UPDATE: We painted the dining room a color that you’ll never expect! See the reveal here!
very, very nice!!!
Oooo, I vote for a nice leafy emerald tone pulled from the fire place tiles. I think that way you can always use any florals for any season to decorate.
Totally agree, Amanda! I’m definitely leaning that way!
Oh, my I had to take a nap after just reading your completed list. For wall color be sure you use a color that will be stimulating to the appetite. You may want to consider the pale rose that is in your table runner and planned cushions. I just love what you’ve done so far and the chandelier is beautiful.
It’s easy to forget how much has been done, but when I start looking back at the pictures I get exhausted! It really has come a long way. The chandelier was the same one Charles’ grandmother bought from Europe a long time ago…I was so thrilled that we could still use it!
The coral/orange from the rug would be gorgeous in there. I have an orange living room and white trim with a vibrant rug and LOVE it. It’s like those ice cream cups you ate as a kid. The Blues and green from the rug will go well as accents but that bright color will draw you in. And I love the chandelier!
Wow! This room has come a LONG way. It looks so elegant. You must be thrilled with the results.
Thanks, Carrie! We are! :)
That fireplace is amazing. In fact the whole room is amazing. Nice work.
Thank you! :)
The progress you’ve made is amazing! And I’m dying over that chandelier!!
Thanks for stopping by, Amanda!
Wow!! You are going to have some great dinner parties in this room. And so glad you kept the chandy, I love it!
There is soooooo much to love about this room! I LOVE the pocket doors, the trim, the fireplace, the space!! I’m loving this house of yours!
Thanks so much, Laura! :)
