Last week I revealed the “after” shots of our master bathroom.  We have done a lot of work and made a lot of changes to our historic home, but this bathroom is by far the biggest change. At one time, part of the upstairs of the house was a separate apartment.  Our master bedroom was the living room, our office was the bedroom, and our new master bathroom was the kitchen.  In houses as old as ours, you virtually never get big bathrooms and big closets.  But since we knew this would be our forever home, and we really had no need for a kitchen upstairs, we decided to go all out and completely rethink the space.   1. Remove kitchenette cabinetry and sink
  2. Remove hot water heater
  3. Remove vinyl flooring
  4. Close up pantry door (became part of the closet wall)
  5. Repair plaster where necessary
  6. Install tile floor in herringbone pattern
  7. Build a water closet for the toilet
  8. Install new toilet
  9. Install tile and glass shower
  10. Install refinished pedestal tub from the office bathroom
  11. Install vanity
  12. Install vanity sconces, vanity mirrors, lights, and ventilation fans
  13. Prep, prime, and paint walls, trim, and ceiling
  14. Hang blinds

What’s left:

  1. Install new overhead light (update!)
  2. Install vanity hardware (update!)
  3. Add rugs and mats
  4. Add built in linen closet

We put the palm in the bathroom for our open house to help fill the empty space in front of the chimney, but eventually we’d like to add a built-in unit for linens.  Maybe something similar to this or this.   3. First, let me start by saying that you are an inspiration. Purchasing an older home to redo is my life dream. Add a large piece of woody land for my two boys to explore, a spot for a horse and I am all set!

    The layout you chose is great and there were elements that I wouldn’t have thought of! Creating a space from a blank slate is no easy task. GREAT idea to keep the toilet on it’s own. :) The tile… oh my – I love the tile! The large sink / cabinet is dreamy as well. Soooo much space!

    1. Thanks, Julie! We did our best to come up with a modern bathroom while still using the traditional design elements found in the rest of the house…like the moldings and doors. Glad you enjoyed it! :)

  25. What a huge renovation project! I love the results. Were you able to salvage the old kitchen cabinets? They looked hand crafted. I bet your home is relatively the same age as ours-looks to be anyway. Thanks for sharing at Fridays Unfolded!

  40. Very impressive. I see you got a glimpse of the history of flooring. We did too when we redid our old house’s kitchen. I really like the lighting arrangement. We put one fixture in the middle and it’s hard for me to get good light for make up. Wish we had been so smart! It really turned out fabulous! Happy Thanksgiving, Linda
