Interview With The Designer: Capella Kincheloe Interior Design

Today I’m so thrilled to introduce you to Phoenix designer Capella Kincheloe! Capella had years of valuable experience before starting her own interior design firm in 2010. She has worked on design projects around the globe, and her worldliness certainly comes through in her beautiful yet functional designs.

When and why did you decide to become a designer?

I have always loved design, like many that choose this path.  As a kid I was rearranging furniture for optimal flow and analyzing ways to make a room look and function better.  It was always my intention to be a designer, but I got off course and finally after working in film and tv after college, I decided I wanted back into design and applied for a job with Michael Smith Inc.

What has been your greatest challenge as a designer?

The greatest challenge for me is learning about client psychology and how to communicate my value.  Like many creatives, my art is very personal and when someone isn’t responsive to my ideas, it can sting.

How would you characterize your style?

I always incorporate antiques for history, something from nature, and a strong emphasis on global culture.  I wrap all that up in a low-maintenance, comfortable, laid-back vibe.

Does your personal home fit your design style?

My home does embody the description in the answer above.  I have a lot of sentimental items passed down from my family – an antique brass scale from my great-grandmother and my husband’s great-great grandfather’s bed, for example.  I have plants and woven chairs for the natural element.  For global culture, nothing beats textiles from around the world; we have Navajo blankets paired with woven tapestries from Iran and India.  But most of all I keep the things in my home to a minimum because it needs to be easy to clean and not feel cluttered.

How has living in Phoenix influenced the way you decorate?

Living in the southwest, it feels more appropriate to decorate with warmer colors and to pull art from local Native American tribes.  But I also avoid the heavy “southwest” feeling that many homes here are known for.  I like light and bright spaces; I want to incorporate the beautiful desert views and bring the outside in.

What was your first paid design project?

When I started Capella Kincheloe Interior Design, I worked with a wonderful client in Atlanta. The budget was low, but it was satisfying because we created something really beautiful, and once the client started trusting my skills, she went out of her comfort zone and those elements became her favorite.  Because the budget was low and she was willing to be adventurous, there was nothing to lose!

702parkproject - CK4

Where do you find your inspiration?

I find inspiration in travel and nature.

702parkproject - CK2

What is the best advice you’ve received?

Be who you are.

702parkproject - CK1

Who has been your greatest professional influence?

I worked four years for Michael Smith, and I couldn’t have asked for a better way to start my interior design career.  Not many people get to work for clients at that level. When I started, I knew nothing.  I didn’t even know what COM meant or what a gimp was!  I had a good sense for design, but I was able to refine and learn about running a business by working for someone else.

702parkproject - CK18

What is your favorite design era?

Now!  I have access to more great furnishings than any designers of another era.  I can purchase a piece in France and can have it installed a few weeks later.  In the past it could have taken 6-12 months for that piece to arrive.

What is your go-to hostess gift?

I really want to say homemade jam or fresh limoncello, but usually it’s just a bottle of wine.

What do you have coming up next?

Right now I am working on a course for interior designers called Jumpstart! Business Training.  I see a lot of designers starting their own businesses and I want to help them get off on the right foot.  Most are creative and good with the design part, but the other 80% of business is actually business.  I realize that I can help more clients by helping their designers.  (To sign up to be notified when it launches, click here!)

702parkproject - grass is greener

I posted this quote on my Instagram last weekend because it has really hit home lately. I have to admit that at some point along the way, our house became a major source of tension and emotional, physical, and financial stress. As hard as we tried, it was unavoidable. Charles and I both grew to resent the huge restoration project we had taken on (hello, did you see this list?!) and it has taken us some time to get back to that feeling of joy.

Last weekend, we got there. We had an extra day off and we put the finishing touches on so many things…vanity hardware, bathroom towel hooks, a new rug, and lots of styling and decorating. We hung photos. We finally got through the last of our boxes from this room. All of a sudden, this tension that had settled into our collective shoulders was magically lifted and we could breathe again. And the grass really did look greener, even in January!

It took a ridiculous amount of work to get there. We had to “water” our house constantly for almost two full years. But now, on the other side of it, I can tell you this much: it has all been totally, unequivocally, completely, positively, 100% worth it.

So this weekend, remember to water the things that matter to you. Happy Friday!

Lovey Dovey

I’m sure if you read any blogs that you’ve seen it by now, but Hallie intrigued us all with her post on the 36 questions you need to answer to fall in love. I’m already in love (looking at you, CP), but it got me thinking…how much do you really know about the girl behind the blog? Not just my blog, but any blog.

So today I’m getting a little personal and answering just a few of those 36 questions.

——————

Would you like to be famous? In what way?

Sure. Not crazy famous, but I wouldn’t mind being known to inspire others. Blogging has shown me how fantastic it feels to really reach people, and I’d love to extend that reach. If fame is the way to do that, then I guess I’d like to be famous. And let’s be honest…who doesn’t want a personal stylist, makeup artist, hairdresser, chef, maid, driver, or trainer?

Before making a telephone call, do you ever rehearse what you are going to say? Why?

I actually do this for just about any call…even to my husband, my mom, my doctor. I hate being caught off guard, so I like to at least have something in mind for how I want the conversation to go. In fact, I never answer unknown numbers for that reason. I figure if it’s important, they’ll leave a message. (This can drive Charles crazy, btw.)

If you were able to live to the age of 90 and retain either the mind or body of a 30-year-old for the last 60 years of your life, which would you want?

Mind. Duh.

If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what would it be?

It seems silly, but I wish my parents had forced me to try more foods. I probably wouldn’t have appreciated it at the time, but eating healthy now is difficult because I really can’t stand veggies. I’ve tried, but I just can’t. Also, piano lessons. I’ve got long skinny fingers that would be perfect for playing.

If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future or anything else, what would you want to know?

Hmm…there’s something very dangerous about looking into the future. It could be a great motivator, but it could also cause one to lose all hope. I guess I might like to know when the best time to have kids would be, and when our house might actually be finished.

What do you value most in a friendship?

Honesty and authenticity. I’d rather someone be a bitch to me than to be fake to my face and ugly behind my back.

How close and warm is your family? Do you feel your childhood was happier than most other people’s?

I honestly believe that I’m a one-percenter when it comes to happy childhoods and close families. The four of us (mom, dad, brother, and I) are eerily tight, and talk to each other at least once a day, even if it’s just on Gchat. My mom will actually text me in this panicky tone when I haven’t called for a couple of days. My big brother was the kid who would climb in my crib when I was a baby just to keep me from crying, and he’s been protecting my heart ever since. If everything else in my life went terribly wrong, I would still count myself blessed because of these wonderful people I get to call my family.

Share with your partner an embarrassing moment in your life.

Oh man, this could get long. I tend to put my foot in my mouth…a lot. And I’m usually hyper aware of it as soon as it happens (#wordvomit). Also I’m clumsy. Like really clumsy. I constantly have new bruises from running into things. But Charles and I met due to my clumsiness, so I guess it can’t be that bad.

The moment that sticks out for some reason is my 15th birthday. My mom took my best friend and me to the mall for some birthday shopping. While eating Chick-fil-a in the food court, my sauce packet basically exploded all over my shirt. Well it must have grabbed someone’s attention, because as I was cleaning it up, a recruiter walked over to my BFF and asked her if she would like to be a child model. So yeah, that was embarrassing.

When did you last cry in front of another person? By yourself?

Oh this is a regular thing. Charles has seen my ugly cry too many times to count.

If you were to die this evening with no opportunity to communicate with anyone, what would you most regret not having told someone? Why haven’t you told them yet?

I would tell past friends that they were an important part of my life. Just like anyone else, I’ve had friendships that have come and gone, but each one shaped me in some way. And just because we don’t keep in touch doesn’t mean that I don’t love them dearly or think about them often.

Your house, containing everything you own, catches fire. After saving your loved ones and pets, you have time to safely make a final dash to save any one item. What would it be? Why?

My engagement ring. It was my mother-in-law’s and is completely irreplaceable to me.
