One Room Challenge Favorites – Spring 2014

Did y’all keep up with the One Room Challenge this year?  These bloggers and designers just continue to impress.  Basically, they have 6 weeks to completely transform a room into something magazine-worthy.  And they never disappoint! Here are a few of my favorites:

1. Mimosa Lane – The Family Room

Aren’t these rooms just stunning?!

In addition to these designers, there were 84 designers that joined in the linkup challenge. These rooms are seriously fantastic…I’d love to join in next year and tackle one of my rooms.  Hmm, where should I start?!

I also couldn’t help but notice that there was a pretty prevalent blue and white theme running through many of these rooms. (Click on photo for source.)

Even one of my favorite blogs, La Dolce Vita, featured blue and white three days in a row last week!  See the gorgeous posts here, here, and here.

Blue and white is such a classic, timeless combination, and I don’t see it going out of style any time soon!

What were your favorites from the One Room Challenge?

Happy Mother’s Day, lovelies!

Isn’t my mom beautiful?!

I feel so fortunate that Charles and I live close enough to both of our moms and can celebrate with each of them today.  We’re heading to brunch in Raleigh now with my family, and then we’ll do dinner back at our house with Charles’ family tonight.  I’m sure someday we’ll get tired of not splitting holidays and trying to do it all, but for now, I love it!!

Currently:

Reading– These DIY lessons from mom.

Thinking– How fun these would be to make.

Deliciously Organized Gold Leaf Seahorse

Wishing– A very happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there, but especially to my several pregnant friends.  Enjoy this special day, knowing that next year you’ll have a little bundle (or two) in your arms!

Hoping– That those that want to follow the blog via email are able to do so.  I thought it was just my blog having trouble, but I’ve been reading all over the internet that bloggers are having trouble with their subscriptions. You can follow me by clicking here, but I would also suggest that you subscribe to Bloglovin’.  It’s a great way to keep up with all of your favorite blogs in one place!

Wearing– My Sunday best for Mother’s Day brunch!

Loving– This color combo.

Wanting– One of these.

Needing– To see this place in person.  And I thought our project was big!

Feeling– Beyond blessed to have both my mom and mom-in-law in my life.  I don’t know what I would do without either of them!!

And in case you missed it this week…

Please Vote!

Happy Friday…again! I just wanted to pop in to ask y’all for a favor.  When my mom showed me that Southern Living was having a “Win a Porch Makeover” contest, I knew we had to enter.  Our house has come so far, and now we really just need to get the porches finished.  Wouldn’t it be amazing to win a porch makeover?!

So now I’m asking you to PLEASE vote for us! All you have to do is click here.  And if you want to share, even better! :)

For the record, they don’t look quite this bad today. The soffits have all been closed up and painted, but the porches have received no love since this picture was taken.

By the Numbers – Vol. 2

I came across this post in my archives from back in October 2013, and I thought it would be fun to update it because quite a few things have changed!

As an accountant (and as my father’s daughter), I tend to always need to put numbers to things. You can count on me to create a spreadsheet or a list for just about anything, and this house has been no different.  I won’t tell you the number of spreadsheets or lists I have (hint: it’s A LOT), but here are a few numbers that I want to remember.

5: number of days it took to negotiate the selling price with the bank

3: number of months we were under contract before closing

house

4: number of contractors we interviewed

14: number of pages submitted for the NC Historic Preservation tax credit application

57: number of meticulously labelled photos submitted with NC Historic Preservation tax credit application

6: number of other 702 Park Avenue’s I find interesting (there’s probably many more, but these were my faves!)

park city, ut

111: number of years since the house was built {It’s 112 now!}

3526: number of square feet in the house {Turns out it’s actually about 3800.}

16: number of rooms

4: number of bedrooms

14: ceiling height in feet for most rooms in the house {Nope, this is just wrong. The downstairs is 11 feet and the upstairs is 10.}

35: number of doors in the house

32: number of windows in the house (not counting the attic or the basement)

8: number of fireplaces in the house

4: number of screen doors

3: number of bathrooms we are renovating renovated {see the den bathroom  here, the upstairs guest bathroom here, and the master bathroom here.}

1: number of bathrooms we are adding

2: number of walls we’re knocking down

1: number of exterior doors closed in

IMG_0594

1: number of windows uncovered

2: number of thefts we’ve had

3: number of trees removed

9: number of interior paint colors picked out (so far) {We’ve painted all but the master bathroom. See our paint colors for the entire house here.}

3: number of exterior colors picked out

4: number of coats of exterior paint

116: number of blog posts about the house {now 224}

31: number of Pinterest boards dedicated to the house {now 36}

60: number of Shutterfly photo albums dedicated to the house (so far) {I haven’t updated in these in forever…I’m just using the blog, Facebook, and Instagram to share pictures now.}

3: number of items that restoring this house checks off my bucket list

4: number of months we thought it would take to finish

9: number of months it will most likely take to finish {HAHAHA! This is laughable. Our 1st anniversary of home ownership is this Saturday, and I think it’s safe to say we won’t be finished. To be fair, I don’t think we’ll ever be finished.  We did finally move in after over 11 months.}

1: number of dream houses we will have when we finish {This is still true.}

Room by Room Recap – The Gold Room

Next up in the Room by Room Recap series is the Gold Room.  This is the room that my father-in-law grew up in.  We call this guest room “the gold room” because it was the only room left with carpet and it was GOLD!  As much as I love gold, that carpet had to go!

We were very pleasantly surprised to find that the floors were in excellent shape after removing the carpet.  They are pretty much the best looking floors in our house.

This room was professionally painted, and there was some miscommunication about the color choice.  We had tried out Orange Bisque by Glidden but it was too salmony for Charles.  So we decided to go with Del Mar Shores by Glidden instead.  Apparently the painter didn’t get the memo because we came home to a wonderfully painted salmon guest room.  Eventually it all worked out and we got the pale yellow we had asked for.

This room is pretty sad when it comes to the decor.  I’ve got a lot of work to do in there, but I wanted to go ahead and show you the progress!

IMG_2676 IMG_2678 IMG_2571 IMG_0541 IMG_3550 IMG_3551 IMG_3553 IMG_4156 IMG_4157 IMG_4159 IMG_4162 1113131313a IMG_1191 IMG_1192 IMG_4948 IMG_4732 IMG_4805 IMG_4991 IMG_4992 IMG_4993 IMG_5526 IMG_5527 IMG_5528 IMG_5529 IMG_5531 IMG_5532

What we’ve finished

  1. Repair plaster walls and ceiling
  2. Repair/replace broken storm windows
  3. Repair window ropes
  4. Clean tile fireplace
  5. Remove carpet
  6. Prep, prime, and paint walls, ceiling, and trim
  7. Update electrical outlets
  8. Install ceiling fan

What’s left

  1. Refinish floors
  2. Re-grout fireplace tiles to make them secure
  3. Furnish and decorate

All of our windows are longer than the 84″ standard drape length, and most are longer than the 95″ length, which is very hard to find.  So for now, I think I will sew a panel onto the bottom of the curtains to add length down to the floor.

You can read more about my plans for the two guest bedrooms here, and you can find my guest bedroom inspiration here.

The figures…This room is 13′ 10″ x 14′ 6″ and has 10′ ceilings. There are 2 windows, 2 interior doors, 1 closet, and 1 fireplace.
