One Room Challenge – Stairs & Hall – The Next Steps

Well the One Room Challenge is over and we can all take a breather. But as any homeowner will tell you, the work is never done.

If you’re not familiar, the One Room Challenge is an event hosted by Linda at Calling It Home and House Beautiful where 20 designers make over a space from start to finish in just 6 short weeks. You can catch those designers each Wednesday, and the rest of us link up on Thursdays. I did my first Challenge last Spring and my second last Fall. And last week, I revealed my latest Challenge: our stairs and hallway!

As I mentioned before, Hurricane Matthew and the massive flooding that ensued put me a little behind on this makeover. Most businesses around here were closed for at least a week, and shipping basically stopped. But it also really put things in perspective. I wasn’t able to get an electrician over because they were all busy working on flooded homes and businesses. Suddenly installing an outlet in our safe and warm hallway didn’t seem so important.

Anyway, here’s what’s left on the to do list…

Install electrical outlet in large hall. There currently is not an outlet in either hall, which means we can’t plug in lamps, chargers, or even the vacuum. (PS – Busted! That lamp isn’t even plugged in!)

Install switch-operated ceiling light in small hall. Right now we just have a pull-chain light bulb fixture. We plan to install a fixture that matches the one in the larger hall that is currently being stored in the attic, and run electricity to a switch on the wall.

Add blinds, drapes, and more art. I’m really excited about how much fuller this space looks now, but it’s definitely not complete. We ordered a blind for the large window at the top of the stairs, but it arrived the day of the photo shoot so we didn’t get it up in time. I plan to install that, and I’d like to add floor length drapes that window. We also have a ton of wall space left, so I’ll be keeping an eye out for some large pieces to fill those spaces.

Slowly but surely we’re checking things off our very long to do list. Out of all the renovations we’ve done, this one is pretty high up there for me. I’m so thrilled with the way it turned out!
