Estate Sale Find: Vintage China Cabinet

If you follow on Instagram, you may have seen that I did a little estate sale shopping in Raleigh this weekend. And let me just tell you…I hit the jackpot! I found the most perfect vintage china cabinet for our dining room that I’ve been searching high and low for. And it was an absolute steal!!

Isn’t she pretty?

For those wondering, I find most of my estate sales on EstateSales.net. I keep a list in my phone of measurements for different rooms in the house, as well as measurements for spaces that need new furniture. When I spotted this one at the estate sale in a really nice part of town, I knew I had to have it!

Within an hour of getting it in the house on Sunday, we were meeting Charles’ mom at her parents’ old house to clean out a china cabinet. And after packing up her mom’s china, we headed to her house to get Aunt Hazel’s crystal set.

Charles is an only child, and both of his parents are only children, so to say they have accumulated a ton of heirloom pieces would be an understatement. In fact, my mother-in-law has told me that basically every piece of furniture in their house was an heirloom piece from a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, or cousin.

As you can see, it didn’t take us long to fill the new cabinet up.

The only negative that I’ve found is that the adjustable shelves don’t look finished. The fronts are glossy, but the actual shelves look dusty, even when completely clean. I know this is partly to help pieces from sliding, but I plan to spiff those up a little. I’d also like to put something on the back of the cabinet, similar to this or this.

The hidden storage below, which is actually behind doors and not drawers as it appears, is great for storing larger pieces and extra place settings.

Without even realizing it, this cabinet turned out to be the exact same size as the one that Charles’ grandmother had in the exact same spot (which, as you could have guessed, is now in my in-laws’ dining room). You can see the wear marks underneath. Pretty cool, right?

Side note: If you haven’t read the story of Charles’ grandmother and how we came to own our house, you can read that here.

Do you shop at estate sales? What big pieces have you been looking for lately?

PS – You can find my tips for vintage shopping here, and my tips for haggling here. I definitely haggled a bit over the china cabinet…even though they said the prices were firm. As my dad always says, “Everything’s negotiable!”

  1. Great find! Beautiful dishes as well! That’s really neat that it fits exactly what used to be in the house at that spot – makes it just that extra bit special.
Estate sales and I are BFFs, and it’s fun to know you’re a fellow haggler ;) Though it wasn’t an estate sale but an auction, I recently found a coffee table I’ve been searching for as well! Such a exciting thing to finally find an item, right?
Still on the search for quite a few pieces as we recently moved into our home, but the biggest and most elusive piece is a tall empire-style bookcase. Keeping fingers crossed! ^_^

  2. Love this piece!! Have you tried a solid wax on the interior? It might make those spots on the interior look more polished.
