Master Bedroom Reveal

Happy Monday, friends! A few weeks ago, I shared the first glimpse into our newly-renovated master bedroom over on Glamista Home. But first, in case you are new here, let me tell you a little bit about our house…

Over two years ago, my husband, Charles, and I decided to take a leap and buy a house in his hometown in NC out of foreclosure. But it wasn’t just any house. We bought the house that Charles’ grandparents once owned. Since his grandmother’s passing ten years prior, the house was sold and fell into serious disrepair. When the bank foreclosed, we decided to buy it and fully restore it. You can learn more about our story here!

Ok, back to the master bedroom. When we bought the house, it looked like this:

And today, it looks like this:

We really didn’t spend too much in this room. The chair is from Target, the wall mirror is from HomeGoods, the lamps are from Garden Ridge, and the curtains, bedding, and pillows are from TJ Maxx. The large painting was found at an estate sale. The garden stool and jewelry tray are vintage, and the dresser and andirons are family heirlooms.

If you’ve seen our house tour, you might have noticed that the Master Bedroom slot has been “coming soon” for some time now. You know how when you get really busy doing a million different things for work or other people, you sometimes forget to look after yourself? Well that’s how this bedroom feels. We’ve put so much effort into the rest of the house that our own bedroom has taken a backseat.

I’m happy with how far we’ve come in this space, but there are still several things I’d like to do in our bedroom. Here are just a few of those…

1. Add a rug.  This space feels so expansive without anything on the floor, but the room is so large that we would need a really substantial rug. Even our king size bed looks small in this room.

2. Install tile around the fireplace. I’d love to go in with some classic subway tile to give this fireplace a clean and sophisticated look.

3. Make a headboard. Because our bed is in front of a window, I just want a simple, low headboard. I only want it to come off of the bed about a foot so that we don’t loose too much of the window. I’m thinking a simple rectangular headboard with a nail head detail around the edges.

4.  Get new nightstands. Right now we are using two living room accent tables that we got years ago. I like the size of them, but I’d prefer to go with something that has drawers. We’ve tried using baskets in the bottoms of these tables, but they just end up accumulating junk. I also love the idea of a small parsons desk or chest of drawers on one side of the bed.

5.  Install crown molding. To me, a room just looks incomplete until you have crown molding. For whatever reason, some rooms in our house have crown and some don’t, but I plan to add crown molding to every room.

6. Hang things on the walls. Our ceilings are 10′ tall, which seem to dwarf just about everything. Even the 5′ tall fireplace seems small in this room. I’ve been trying to hold out for some larger pieces in our bedroom, but I may end up biting the bullet and going with a gallery wall of some sort.

So that’s the plan! As you can see, we’re really in no hurry to get there. This is our “forever home” so we just plan to do a little at a time. In the meantime, you can check out our master bathroom renovation (in which we turned an old kitchen into a spa-like bathroom) and our master closet renovation. What room are you working on these days?
