Hillwood Estate – Part 1

A few weeks ago, Charles and I took a little road trip up to Washington, DC with his parents. My father-in-law’s cousin passed away in August, and just 13 days later, his wife followed. They lived out west and I only had the pleasure of meeting them once, but let me just say…witnessing a funeral service at Arlington National Cemetery is an incredibly moving experience.

Since we already had to be in DC, we decided to stay the weekend and made a trip to one of my new favorite places, the Hillwood Estate.

Marjorie Merriweather Post, heiress to Post & General Mills cereal brands and DC socialite, bought Hillwood in 1955. The estate sits on 25 acres in northwest DC, and the house is filled with Marjorie’s favorite decor styles: 18th Century French and Imperial Russian. She quickly decided that she wanted to use her home as a museum to inspire and educate the public. You can read more about the house here.

A Picture Perfect 19th Century Southern Home

Y’all. This New Orleans house. I can’t get over it.

The home belongs to Jane Scott Hodges, founder of Leontine Linens. This Greek Revival was built in 1869 and, in my opinion, is decorated perfectly. The way that traditional and modern are pulled together in this house, and the use of bright colors that don’t seem overwhelming is just flawless. It’s everything I hope for in my own home! Let’s have a look!

Historic Southern Homes: Monticello

Today’s Historic Southern Home is a little more famous than many I’ve shared. Monticello, located just outside Charlottesville, VA, was home to President Thomas Jefferson.  The plantation sits in the Southwest Mountains just below the Rivanna Gap, and originally spanned over 5,000 acres. The Neoclassical-Palladian house includes 43 rooms and an octagonal dome above the west front of the building.

Historic Southern Homes: Dunleith Historic Inn

It’s been a while since our last Historic Southern Home tour! Today, I’ve got the major wanderlust itch to head down to Natchez, MS to stay at Dunleith Historic Inn.

Like many of the old plantations in Mississippi, Dunleith has been turned into a luxury inn. The main house was built in 1856, and still includes some of the original plantation’s elements today. The Greek Revival style house has 26 columns and many floor-to-ceiling windows, which allow access to the porch. The plantation is made up of 40 beautifully maintained acres, and also includes additional buildings dating all the way back to the 1790s.
