One Room Challenge – Week 4

Welcome to week 4 of the One Room Challenge! In just 2 short weeks I’ll be sharing the final reveal of our two-story back porch makeover!

ORC-LP-250x183

Last week I shared the design plan for each of the two porches, and I’m ashamed to say that not much has happened since. It’s ok though…I work better under pressure. :)

Anyway, here’s a look at the freshly painted porches (and some good ol’ NC pollen).

Here’s what’s on this week’s to do list:

  1. Scrub the porches to get rid of the nasty pollen residue
  2. Paint the doors red
  3. Hang curtains

I’ve been putting off painting the doors because I’m just not sure what I want to do. The upstairs doors are easy; they are mostly like the front doors with a solid wood interior door and an outside screen door. But I’m just not sure about the downstairs doors. We have a solid wood door on the inside, but the outer door is a metal storm door. I was considering painting it with a Rustoleum paint, but I’m just not sure how well it will hold up to the elements. Do you have any thoughts that might help?

My next list is the things I have yet to acquire:

  1. Large seating for upstairs (I’d love a retro metal glider, but it may be a rattan love seat or bamboo sofa)
  2. Lighting for the downstairs porch
  3. Hanging baskets for plants
  4. A rug for the downstairs porch
  5. Wall decor

I’m feeling pretty indecisive about what I want to hang on the walls. I was in Kirkland’s the other day and saw this mirror that I liked, but I’m worried about the metal rusting. In fact, I’ve seen a lot of metal mirrors that I like but have the same reservation.

Thrifting Lately – 4.22.15

I’ve had some good luck thrifting lately! Lots of good finds. I’ve pulled the trigger on some for myself and some for the shop, and I’ve also passed up quite a few. Take a look!

I also snagged this dirty old brass pineapple in need of some love. Thanks so Brasso and elbow grease, this sucker shined right up and sold quickly!

I also really loved this retro glider for the porch makeover, but I just couldn’t justify the price given how much work I would need to put in it. But I’m keeping my eyes peeled for another one at a decent price!

Wedding Season, Part 1

Wedding season is upon us! Just when we thought we were winding down the wedding phase of our lives and revving up the baby shower phase, we got 6 new Save The Dates in about a two-week time frame. So we’re jumping back into wedding mode!  We had our first wedding of the year last weekend (you can see a few photos here) and it was an absolute blast.

wedding 2

So it got me thinking…unlike a lot of bloggers, I was already married when I started this little project, so I never really shared anything about my own wedding. I’ve loved reading and seeing others’ wedding plans over the years and thought I would take a few posts to share a little bit about mine. Weddings and personal posts not your thing? No worries, I’ll be back tomorrow with more house-related stories, and you can catch the One Room Challenge update on Thursday. But for those of you who are interested, here goes…

Let’s start with the actual wedding itself. We got married on the hottest day of the century: July 28, 2012. Although it was hot, it was the most perfect day. Charles and I chose one word that we wanted to embody the feel of our wedding….timeless. And I think we achieved it! We went with all black, white, and gray decor with lots of candles and mercury glass. Simple and sophisticated.

Charles and I didn’t do a first look (he’s very superstitious), but I loved the first look I had with my dad. It was a very special moment, especially because it took place in the sanctuary that I grew up in. I was baptized there and I was married there. It was perfect.

We were surrounded by the best friends and family throughout the entire day, and we both said we’ve never felt so loved. These people meant the world to us, and still do.

I’ll be back next week to share a little more about our big day. Happy wedding season!

This Week’s Links

Happy Sunday, friends! What a fun weekend it has been! I was so honored to be a part of one of my very best friends’ big day…it was a gorgeous wedding and she was a beautiful bride!

And now for a few links for you to enjoy…

A few kitchen trends happening right now.

Anyone else find this appalling?

I love this fireplace face lift…it makes me want to break out my faux marble contact paper again!

How to choose the right sofa for your space.

How’s it going? Emily’s post about how we respond to this question struck a cord with me. My dad has always hated when someone would answer, “Hanging in there” or “Not too bad” so I generally make a conscious effort to avoid those replies. Just a simple, positive response can change your whole day!

These patios and porches definitely have me ready for Spring.
