In the Navy

I am completely exhausted after this three day weekend!  On Saturday we traveled across the state to help my brother and his fiancee move.  But we didn’t mind because we moved them closer to us!  Then Sunday and Monday were completely devoted to our house.  Luckily, Charles and I both have pretty cool parents, and they offered us a lot of help.  A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO THEM!!!

One of the more exciting projects we accomplished was painting the office.  I knew this would be the hardest and most time consuming room, simply because we chose such a dark color.  Over the weekend, we were able to get two full coats on.  We need at least one more coat, maybe two, but I’m getting more and more excited about this space!

The trim hasn’t been repainted yet, but I know that the glossy white is really going to POP in this room! For the walls, we went with Valspar Filoli Dark Iris.  When we started our first coat, it was coming out a little Grover blue, as my dad said.  But as it dried, it darkened quite a bit and now I think it’s the perfect color! Here’s a little bit of my inspiration:

So what do you think?  Are you a fan of the blue?

Ok sorry, I’m done.  For real though, we need a chimney sweep.  And they’re harder to find than you would think!  We have two chimneys with eight fireplaces that need to be inspected and cleaned.  So if anyone has any suggestions for a good one in eastern NC, please let me know!

Laundry Room Tile Style

Remember this monstrosity that we started with?

Well, it’s getting a facelift.  You may remember that we pulled up all the vinyl in the kitchen, butler’s pantry, and laundry room several weeks ago.   For the most part, this is what we found:

IMG_4293

Unfortunately, we discovered that there must have been a leak in the laundry room, because not only was the wood floor rotten, the subfloor was rotten and the floor joists below were beginning to decay as well.  So what do you do when you find out you have a rotten floor?  You rip it out!

Thanks to some creative patching, we now have a very sturdy subfloor underneath our laundry room:

Next up: tile!  We decided to go with a very basic ceramic tile for 3 reasons…1. It’s the laundry room, and it’s very small, and we don’t plan to have lots of people hanging out in there; 2. It’s cheap; and 3. It hides dirt very well.  One special feature that we did decide to add is an emergency drain in the floor.  So if, in the future, we have a leak like the previous one, water will be funneled out instead of rotting through our floors.  Seemed like a no-brainer to us.

So now we are just waiting for grout!

And of course our shiny new washer and dryer!

Disclaimer:  Most of the photos in this post were taken on different days at different times in different light.  Thus, the variations.  If a professional photographer that can take photos at the best time of day while I’m at work magically appeared, I probably wouldn’t be upset.  A girl can dream, right?

Power House

Is there anything tackier than power lines?  Sure, I understand their use, but nothing looks worse than a beautifully restored house with ugly cables attached to it.  Ok, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point.

Last week, we had a trench dug alongside our house and the power lines were laid underground.  It sounds like a minor change, but aesthetically, it makes a huge difference!  Here’s a look at the before:

And now:

Unfortunately we had a ton of rain right after the trenching, so the side yard is pretty much all mud right now.  But that’s an easy fix!  I think we can count this as just one more successful check mark off the list!

Tardy to the Party

Well it took him a month to get here, but our new tile guy is definitely earning his keep!  You can imagine my excitement when he was still working at the house at 9 pm last night!!

The laundry room and downstairs bathroom are prepped and ready for grout.  Here’s a little preview:

Ok, that’s my teaser for the day.  Follow me on Instagram and Twitter to see more!

Splish Splash

As you might know from Instagram, we now have a “baby” clawfoot tub.  It is only 4 feet long–the perfect size to fit into our upstairs guest bathroom.  It’s in pretty good condition.  It just needs a good cleaning and a paint job and we’ll be in business.

So this is where it gets fun.  That bathroom is pretty much a blank slate, and all of the tile we’ve picked out is white, with gray grout.  So really, just about anything will “go” in there.  (FYI – the adjoining office will have navy walls with white trim.)  We just have to decide if we want to leave the tub white and neutral, or make it a feature with a punch of color!  I’m loving these painted tubs:

Once we pick a color (which could be white, who knows), the question becomes do we want to paint the feet the same color, or do we make them an accent in a different finish?  Here are some pretty cool metallic options:

So what do you think?  Would you go with color, or keep it neutral?  Which color is your favorite?
