100 Years of History

Last Friday, I was honored to host the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) at our house.  I’m not a member, but this chapter was started right here in our foyer exactly 100 years ago, in 1914.  So when the club asked if they could hold the October meeting here, I was all for it!

If you’ve followed for a while or read our story, you may know that our house is historically registered as the Taylor-Gaylor house.  It was built by Charles Taylor in 1902 for his private residence, and in 1939, my husband’s grandfather, Charles Gaylor, bought the house with his wife, Mildred. Anyway, Charles Taylor’s wife, Emma, started the local DAR chapter.

Somehow we acquired the architectural inventory book for our town, which was published in 1987.  Our house is in the book, and the DAR was important enough to make it into the blurb!

So, back to the party.  I wish I had better photos, but I was trying to snap a few quick ones while playing hostess.  But there were just a few things I wanted to share with you.

The flowers were absolutely stunning.  Seriously, jaw dropping.  One of the very talented members does floral arrangements using blooms she’s planted in her own yard.  She had no idea my dining room was purple, but the flowers could not have been more perfect for the space.

The meeting was at 4:00 pm and consisted of “high tea.”  I served each cup, which was a lot of fun, and allowed me to meet almost all of the 50+ women there.  They were so cute in their fancy hats and gloves!

The ladies brought lots of information on the history of the club, as well as the house, which we displayed on the piano.

I enjoyed learning the history of the family that built our house, but perhaps the best part of the whole day was meeting the nieces of Mr. Taylor.  They came to the event and were thrilled to see the house now, as they had spent some time here as small children.  In their words, it looks “incredibly different, and incredibly beautiful.”  I’ll take that as a compliment! :)

Subtle Changes

We’re going to play a little game. Can you find the two major differences in the house from August (on the left) and October (on the right)?

Did you catch them?

First, the foundation has been painted.  We had the brick repointed several months ago, making our foundation safer and sturdier.  But it left our foundation looking unfinished.  So last weekend, Charles got busy with the paint sprayer and took care of the ugliness.  The result: a fresh, crisp looking foundation all the way around!

The other thing we did is so small you might not have even noticed. We finally got around to hanging our house numbers!  The original house numbers were very small and hung above the screen door.  Since our door is not centered on the house or between the front columns, it made the numbers hard to see from certain angles.  So we upgraded to some larger numbers and hung them on the very front.  I could not be happier with them!

This Week’s Links

Happy Sunday!

Yesterday morning I did a little shopping at the big outdoor sale that my favorite antique mall hosts. If you follow me on Instagram, you know I found some goodies! And last night, we went to an adorable baby-Q (that’s a baby shower barbecue for those of you not on the baby circuit).  So today should be a full day too…full of laziness!

Target does it again.  And again, and again.

Can you guess which celebrity lives in which house? You might be surprised!

I’m just gonna say it. I’m not a huge fan of most Halloween decorating. To me, most things just end up looking tacky. So of course I love this classy spin on Halloween decor.

It’s never too early to start thinking about Christmas gifts. I love this collection of gifts for the host.

Thrifting Lately – 10.23.14

I’ve been doing just a little bit of thrifting lately and wanted to share some of my finds with you.  I’ve been seeing lots of yummy stuff, but just haven’t pulled the trigger on a lot of it.  I guess I’m just being extra picky these days. So first, I’ll share the pieces I left behind.

One shop had loads of beautiful brass. I especially loved the little owl and the extra large duck bookends.

And these elephants were pretty major. They were huge and gorgeous, but just a little too pricey that day.  I’ll definitely be keeping my eye on them though!

I also thought this was the sweetest little bar chair, and the faux brass bamboo TV tray definitely caught my eye!

I found a set of matching peacock lamps that were pretty cute too.  Not really my style, but they could definitely work in certain spaces.

But now for a few things that I just couldn’t pass up…

The BOSS bookends might be my most favorite purchase ever. They were seriously fabulous, and sold within 5 minutes of listing them in the shop.  The antelope bookends are still listed though!

Speaking of the shop, I also recently added this matching pair of vintage floral lamps. Aren’t they pretty!?

Neutral Looks for Less

From an early age I learned to shop for bargains and sales when it comes to just about everything (except toilet paper and trash bags).  I shop way more than I should, but I always try to get a lot of bang for my buck, which is how I discovered Kirkland’s a long time ago. I’ve been shopping Kirkland’s to decorate my living spaces from my college dorm room to our new master bathroom, where I snagged two mirrors for our custom vanity for under $80 total!

One of my favorite things about Kirkland’s is the plethora of neutrals they have available.  Since we decided to use color on our walls instead of going with beige or gray throughout the house, neutral accents don’t get washed out like they might otherwise. I think decorating is about finding that balance between bland/boring and sensory overload!  With Kirkland’s, it’s easy!

Here are a few of my favorite neutral pieces and how they compare in price.

With Kirkland’s, you don’t have to sacrifice style or quality for your bargain piece.  You can get everything you want without the scary price tag! I’ve gotten so many comments on our vanity mirrors and other decorative accents I have around the house, and I always smile knowing that I didn’t have to spend a fortune to pull it off.

Which of these items is your favorite? Do you shop at Kirkland’s? What deals have you found?
