The Garage Gets a Makeover

To say that our garage was looking dilapidated when we found it would be somewhat of an understatement.  Originally a carriage house, this sad little detached garage was in serious need of a whole lot of love!

A few before shots…

As you can see, the sides and back of the garage were somewhat….overgrown.  After clearing out all of the overgrowth and giving the front a coat of paint, so at least it didn’t look so awful from the street, the new metal roof went on.

Side note: Many people have commented about loving our new metal roof on the house, but the truth is, it’s not new at all! We just painted the black metal gray.  It does look brand new, which we love, but it also helps lower the temperature in our uninsulated attic, helping greatly with our energy bills in the summer.

Ok, back to the garage roof.  The original roof was basically wood and tar paper, and our insurance company didn’t like that at all.  So we found a metal that matched what we did on the roof of the house and ran with it.

After that, the sides and back got a good scraping and some fresh paint to match the house.

We also added new black hinges to really give the front a little pop.  We think it’s a pretty nice transformation from start to end…er, middle.

I say middle because this is far from the end for this sweet little garage. Come back tomorrow and I’ll be sharing the 3 phases we have planned for this garage renovation!

Interview With The Designer: Ginger Brewton Interiors

Today we’re starting the week off right with some fabulous eye candy from interior designer Ginger Brewton of Ginger Brewton Interiors.  Hailing from Charleston, SC, Ginger has received numerous accolades, including being named one of House Beautiful’s 2010 Top 20 Next Wave of Interior Designers to Watch and being featured in Garden & Gun, Coastal Living, and Southern Lady.

When and why did you decide to become a designer?

I’ve always had a love for homes. When I was little, my mom and I loved to drive around and look at homes. I still do it today. It’s lovely to see the different architectural styles that vary across the world, and how people live. I was a fashion merchandising major in my undergrad years, but once I graduated I still leaned towards interiors. I decided to go back to school to study interior design. Sold my belongings, packed up and headed for Manhattan.

What has been your greatest challenge as a designer?

I think it’s a challenge at times to educate a client on the value in a particular piece, or craft. There is a huge difference between a mass manufactured pieces, and a piece that has been crafted totally by hand. It goes back to the saying “You get what you pay for,” and it’s true.

GB14

How would you characterize your style?

I personally have a transitional style. Something I like to think of as a modern classic. I love cleaner lines, mixed in with antiques. I’ve always been big on balance, and I think the most beautiful design is mixing a little traditional in with modern. I love color, but there is also an edginess to me that I definitely express through my clothes, and it’s becoming more evident in my interiors.

GB12

Does your personal home fit your design style?

Yes, but I would say everyone’s style evolves as time goes on and you mature. My design style has had a common thread throughout the years, but it has definitely evolved into something more sophisticated.

How has living in Charleston influenced the way you decorate?

Charleston has a lot of history, and it is very artsy. There are a lot of different vibes and cultures, and the growth here is tremendous. The mix of tradition and modern is very similar to my own style. A little bit of the past with a dose of the present, with a little bit of edge.

GB5

What was the focus of your first paid design project?

My first paid design project was an office, which may not sound that exciting but this client wanted to make the office something spectacular and trusted me completely. It wasn’t a large space, but we did a couple of really beautiful custom pieces that made such a statement and reflected his personal style.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Traveling is my biggest source for inspiration. I love to travel and explore new places and cultures. It’s thrilling to fly somewhere or to just discover new places in a small town down the road. It clears my head, and opens my mind to new ideas.

GB3

What is the best advice you’ve received?

When I had just moved to NY, I was nervous and knew no one. I called my mom crying telling her I didn’t know if I could do it. She basically told me to put on my big girl panties, and follow through on the decision I had made. By far, the best advice and best decision ever.

CoverDining-088202

Who has been your greatest professional influence?

There are so many, in different facets of design, it’s hard to name just one. Kara Mann is a favorite – super talented with an edgy style to her design. I love Roman and Williams, Peter Block and Bobby McAlpine. Tom Scheerer does beautiful work, and Kelly Wearstler has always been an inspiration (and she’s from SC). Also influenced by Coco Chanel and Diane von Furstenberg.

GB4

What is your favorite design era?

I love mid-century modern because of its simplicity, but I also love 18th century. There is so much detail and history there. I want to know the stories behind the pieces.

GB2

What’s at the top of your bucket list?

To spend the summer in Italy and speaking fluent Italian.

GB13

What do you have coming up next?

Several exciting things are in the works, but I am really excited to renovate and design my own house!

Quotable Friday & #30ThankfulDays2014

  702parkproject - grateful heart

Happy Halloween, lovelies! Halloween is great and all, but tomorrow brings the start of my favorite month: November.  In November, we finally get some fall weather down here in the south, I celebrate my birthday, we spend lots of time with friends and family, and we give thanks.  And I have so much to be thankful for.

So, for the next 30 days, I’ll be posting a photo a day on Instagram of something I’m thankful for, using the hashtag: #30thankfuldays2014.  I hope you’ll join me in making an effort to say out loud the things that we so often forget to be grateful for.  See you on Insta!

PS- Don’t have Instagram? No problem! I’ll be sharing all of my posts on Facebook too, and I invite you to join in there!

Our 3 Budget-Friendly Fall Mantels

  702parkproject - fall mantels budget

Since we just officially moved in in May, this is our first fall in the house.  I had these dreams that by the fall, every mantel and every room would be beautifully (and differently!) decorated. HA!!! I was just lucky to get just a couple of rooms and 3 of the 8 mantels in the house decorated by mid-October!

The biggest issues?  Space and cost.  What stuffed our little apartment to the brim barely covers a couple of rooms in our “new” house.  I thought I had a lot to work with, but I was wrong, and it’s not like I could go out and spend a ton on all new stuff. Thank goodness for my mom and mother-in-law, who have helped me add to my stock, along with a few key sales.

My favorite by far is our natural fall mantel in the foyer. I like a lot of rustic looks, but to be honest, they usually just don’t really fit with the style and feel of our house.  I love how this mantel kind of marries a rustic and glam look together without feeling too woodsy or too fancy.

IMG_5981 IMG_5980 IMG_5983 IMG_5978 IMG_5984

The magnolia leaves and berries are from our yard, and the pumpkin was $3 at the grocery store, so this was a very inexpensive mantel to pull together.

I went for a more casual and fun look in the den, with lots of traditional pumpkins, gourds, leaves, and scarecrows. Most of the items I used were from the Michael’s clearance bins.

IMG_5999 IMG_5996 IMG_5998 IMG_5997

I also picked up a pack of fake fall leaves for about $1 at Michael’s and spread them all around the house in various places for a little punch of fall here and there.  I think they really pulled this mantel together.

Last but not least was the dining room mantel. I stuck a couple of lanterns I had up there, and added a little fall ribbon to them.  The candle sticks usually reside on the mantel in the den, but I thought they dressed up the dining room a bit next to the lanterns.  I picked up the glass pumpkin, which is so beautiful and one of my favorite pieces, at TJ Maxx this year.  Throw in a little greenery from the yard and bam! Finished!

Pretty simple, huh? And if you’re looking for just one more idea, I’ll share one of my favorites: candy corn! During the fall, you can use candy corn to decorate just about anything.

CraftFail Book Review + A Giveaway! {ENDED}

We’ve all been there.  You find the cutest idea on Pinterest…a jack-o-lantern brownie recipe, a glitter high heel DIY, a peppermint wreath tutorial. You can do this, they said.  It will be easy, they said.  A few hours and maybe some tears later, all you’re left with is a big fat FAIL.

  Craft Fail

Well now you don’t have to feel alone, because founder and “chief executive failer” of CraftFail.com, Heather Mann, has just released her fun and awkwardly uplifting book, CraftFail.  In her witty introduction, Heather writes, “CraftFail is a celebration of the creative process, but unlike those perfect magazine shots and idealized online inspiration boards, we showcase the gruesome underbelly of the creative process…I do not want anyone to be discouraged from trying, but instead to be encouraged by the society of creative failers who are brave enough to share their craft blunders.”

If you haven’t picked up a copy yet, you really should. This book is sure to provide hours of entertainment, and there’s even a quiz to help you get started: Are you an all star CraftFailer?

Here are just a few of my favorites from the book…
