Our Christmas Home Tour

Better late than never, right?  Here’s a glimpse inside our holiday home. #firstchristmasonparkave

So this is your view when you walk in our front door.

We need a bigger tree skirt, but I’m pretty much in love with this tree. We don’t have a tree topper yet, but we decided to just leave it this year because it really doesn’t need anything. We may have screwed ourselves over by getting the prettiest tree our first year…how will another tree ever live up to these 10.5 feet of gloriousness?! (Seriously though, the photos don’t do it justice.)

By the way, the brass shelf by the fireplace is for sale. I just haven’t gotten around to photographing it yet, but it looked prettier here than in the garage. If you’re interested, hit me up!

The nutcracker collection is actually Charles’. His mother has been collecting them for him for year, and this year she handed them over to us. We have decided to add one of our own each year.

I decided to not do a big centerpiece on the table, mainly because you have a great view of the Christmas tree from the table.

This simple mantel turned out to be one of my favorites. The rest of the room could use a little more, but for our first Christmas in the house (and with about a gazillion different things going on), I’m pretty happy with the result.

A Custom DIY Frame For Under $10

If you follow me at all, then you know I love the South! So you can imagine my excitement when I discovered Old Try, a southern husband-wife team living in Boston, but creating unique pieces that remind them of home in the South.

One of my favorite prints at Old Try is the Five String banjo. I love the simplistic yet modern style. I thought about having this print framed, but like so many prints, framing was much more expensive than the print itself cost.

So what do you do when you don’t want to pay a ton for custom framing? You DIY, of course! For under $10, I was able to create a fun and different custom frame for this beautiful piece of southern art.

702 park project - diy frame

Here’s how I did it…

Materials: 1 long piece of decorative molding (I used 7 feet by 1.5 inches), wood varnish or paint, 4 screws and corresponding bolts (I used 1/4-inch-20), and 1 saw-tooth hanger.

First, cut the molding into the lengths that you want. You will need 4 pieces.  Since the print is 13″ wide, I cut the molding to 15″ in order to have 1 inch on each side.

Next, apply a few coats of varnish to each piece of molding. I used the leftover varnish from this project and applied two coats. You could also spray paint these if you’d prefer a different color.

  IMG_6111 IMG_6127

Then carefully measure where you want your screw holes to go and drill through the molding.  I measured 2″ in from the end of each piece, and then drilled through two pieces at a time to ensure that the holes would line up. (Side note: those are “my assistant’s” hands. Mine are not that hairy.)

Sandwich the 2 sets of molding around the top and bottom of the print and add your screw. I picked a large brass screw, but it’s really a matter of preference.

Lastly, add a saw-tooth hanger to the pack, and you’re finished!

That’s it! The easiest frame ever!

This Week’s Links

Happy Sunday, lovebugs! How is it the week of Christmas already?! This year has really flown by, and has brought some pretty huge changes in our lives. I’m looking forward to the next two weeks off (how did Charles and I luck out with these “real world” jobs?!) to spend some time working on the house and the projects we’ve been putting off. For now, enjoy these last links of the year!

A how-to guide on surviving holiday travel.

I’ve been crushing on some foyers lately, especially this one.

Great tips on starting and growing a unique art collection.

I’m so glad to know I’m not the only one who gets pissed off when watching House Hunters.

This nursery makeover. So chic. (PS- Emily’s projection on her son’s future romantic life is worth the read!)

I’m pretty jealous of this business idea. Someone build me a barn!

Serial concluded last week. What did you think of the finale? All I can say is…I can’t wait for another season!

I wouldn’t mind cozying up in this room over the holidays.

And in case you missed it…

Gift Guide Monday – For The Entertainer

I know, I know…it’s Thursday. It’s been a pretty rough week. We lost our sweet fur baby on Monday, and it’s been even harder than we imagined. To say that I’ve been a little blue this week would be an understatement. So that’s why I’ve been MIA…in case you were wondering.

Anyway, enough with the sad stuff. Here are some ideas for the hostess with the mostess!  Remember, each item comes from a small business and is under $100.
