Summer Bucket List

I think the proverbial bucket is full this summer!  Between moving, my new job, Charles taking the bar exam, my new business venture, and oh yeah, restoring a 111-year-old house, I think we have our hands full.  But if you know anything about me, you know I love making lists, so I thought this would be a great one to hold onto for next summer!

summer

1.  Have drinks on the porch regularly.

2. Spend more time at the pool and/or beach.

3. Go on an “anniversary” trip with our friends…I’m thinking Caribbean.

4. Host a big backyard party.

5. Go to at least one concert.

6. Go camping.

7.  Grill often.

8.  Pick one room in the house and finish is completely.

9.  Learn to garden.

10.  Make homemade ice cream.

11.  Throw Charles a spectacular 30th birthday party.

What’s on your summer list?

Reminiscing

Charles and I have been married almost a year!  July 28 is our anniversary, and in light of the upcoming date, I thought I’d share a few (okay…a lot) of my favorite moments from our wedding weekend.

1.  Charles and I were completely surrounded the entire weekend by our most favorite people. I’ve never felt so loved in all my life.  I can’t imagine us doing any of it without all of them!!

2.  While taking pictures before the ceremony, my bridesmaids started singing “Let’s Get Married” by Jagged Edge (which I had not heard since middle school) and dancing.  You know the one…”Meet me at the altar in  your white dress.  We ain’t getting no younger, we might as well do it.”  Good times.

3.  I don’t have a picture of this one, but it’s at the very top of my list…my great friend, Jenni, who I’ve known since Kindergarten (and with whom there are wayyyyy too many memories and inside jokes to even begin) was of course a bridesmaid (she’s the one above on the far left).  The bridesmaids and I had about 5 minutes alone in the bridal room before we had to head to the sanctuary.  My mom had gone to be seated, our wedding director was out of the room, the photographers were getting into place.  It was just us.  And then Jenni grabbed my hand and asked if we could pray, and she said the sweetest prayer I’ve ever heard.  That was definitely one of the most special moments of the day.  Thank you, Jenni–I love you!

4. This picture.  From the day we got engaged, Charles and I both agreed on one word that we wanted our wedding to be: timeless.  I feel that this picture really captures that.

5.   This moment right before walking down the aisle.  My daddy looked at me and said, “Are you ready?”  And I said, “Let’s go!”  I’ve never been so sure and so steady in my whole life.

6.  The dancing!

7. Oh, remember that time the entire wedding reception sang Bohemian Rhapsody?  And Greg Stryker did a nasty air guitar solo?

Without a doubt the best day in my entire life.  I wish we could do it all again!!  (Without all the money and all the planning.)  Here’s hoping we look like this in 30 years:

We’re Taking This Party Outside

It looks like the sun has decided to hang out for a few days.  (I’m knocking on wood as I’m typing this!!)  And you know what that means….time for major exterior work to commence!  You know you’re the homeowner of a really old house in need of a lot of repairs when you start jumping up and down with excitement over this sight:

IMG_0626

It’s a boom.  For reaching things really high up.  Like rotten eaves and gutters.  And a roof.  Yipeeeee!!!!  Okay, so there hasn’t been a ton of work just yet, but there has been some serious investigating going on in order to determine what materials will be needed.  Hey, I’ll take it!

Inside, things are starting to get cleaned up so that we can start with the primer.  There’s only one room remaining that needs plaster repair–the laundry room.  Luckily that job should be quick and dirty.

On the question of whether to paint the front door black or white…thanks for all the feedback, both on the blog and on Facebook!  I love interacting with all of you and reading your opinions.  But I have to say, with all the love in my heart, Y’ALL ARE NO HELP!!  You were hopelessly deadlocked straight down the middle.  Hahahaha!  Now you see my problem, right?  It’s such a tough decision!  I’ll keep thinking and let you know what we decide.

Making Room on My Plate

As if there wasn’t already enough going on in my life, I’ve decided to take on a business venture!  My cousin-in-law, Mary, and I are opening The Remedy House, an online (for now) shop in September.  We will have lots of vintage, custom, and handmade items–perfect for the home or for gifts!  We are also carrying Stella & Dot accessories, which is up and running already.  Like us on Facebook to get all the updates.

Excitement in the Bathroom

No, not that kind of excitement.  Get your mind out of the gutter!

Let me first say that the pictures in this post are absolutely awful.  Hopefully one of these days it will stop raining (I feel like it has rained every single day for a month…and I don’t think that’s much of an exaggeration.)  When it does, I will take the good camera over and get a whole bunch of good ones!  For now, please forgive the very poor lighting and picture quality.

Ok, back to the story.  Yesterday was a fun day–I had to work (ok, that part wasn’t all that fun), but I got off a little early and came home to meet my brother and his girlfriend.  They haven’t seen the house yet, so I was super excited to show them and spend some time giving a “tour.”  When we got to the house, I got even more excited when I saw that all three bathrooms had major changes.

1.  Downstairs bathroom- This is the bathroom with the green tub and sink, and the window covered by the tile shower.  Well, at least the last one isn’t true anymore.  Here’s the before and after.

IMG_0605

We will finish it off with some privacy glass and subway tile.  It’s a huge difference!  But I definitely had to let the green tub know that his days are still numbered.

2.  Upstairs hall bathroom-  Remember this “after thought” bathroom?  The one with the 2′ x 2′ shower that pretty much blocked all access to the attic?  Yeah…it’s gone!  We decided to leave the toilet and sink so that we have an extra half bath for our guests (until we do our master bathroom…then it’s got to go!).  But I hated that shower even more than the green tub, so it is outta there.

3.  Upstairs back bathroom- this was the biggie!  This is the bathroom that will eventually be a guest bathroom, but will serve as our master bathroom until we convert the old kitchenette into our master bathroom.  This one was even more cramped than the hall bathroom!  And it had an exterior door.  Why you need an exterior door in the bathroom I will never understand.  Here it is before:

And here it is now:

Who knew that that room could be so much bigger?!  We can work with this.  Here’s the view of that door from the outside now:

And if having major changes in all three bathrooms wasn’t enough for the day, they also opened up our two covered fireplaces!  Here they are before (in the office and master bedroom, respectively):

And here they are now:

Certainly not pretty, but with some paint and simple tile, they’ll spiff right up!  So all in all, yesterday was a day of good news (with the exception of the weather forecast).  And today is FRIDAY!!  Have a good weekend! :)
