The Sunday Currently, #7

I have literally had NOTHING on the schedule this weekend.  Not a single thing.  We were invited to two weddings this weekend, but unfortunately I couldn’t make either of them…crutches and a massive cast don’t really go with outdoor weddings.  But I’m wishing both couples a lifetime of bliss!!

So, what have I been doing with this free weekend?  Catching up on tv, catching up on magazines, cleaning the house, and enjoying this beautiful (although non fall-like) weather.  Plus we moved a desk and a piano into the house!  Here’s what else I’m up to…

Currently:

Reading– This tutorial on how to tie a bow-tie.  I just feel like that’s something every southern girl should know how to do, and I’m determined to master it!!

18bc0b191e25881e7bc471cdaaff951d

Writing– A birthday card to sweet Brody, who turned 3 on Friday.  We’ll be heading to his birthday party this afternoon.

Listening– To HGTV.  Feeling blessed that we haven’t had to apply for an episode of “Rescue My Renovation”!!

Thinking– That throw pillows are ridiculously expensive!!  I love this, this, this and pretty much all of these, but geeeeez!! Those prices!  An expensive rug…sure, I can stomach that.  Even the occasional absurdly-priced bar cart.  But paying an arm and a leg for a pillow?  Nope, can’t do it.  Am I the only one that thinks this is crazy?  Any tips on where to find quality pillows at a better price?

Wishing–  My dear friend, Erin, a super duper 26th birthday! I can’t wait to see her next weekend!! :)

Wearing– Jeans and one shoe…my new normal.

Loving–  How good fall TV is so far.  I’m loving my old favorites: Grey’s, Scandal, Nashville, and Sons of Anarchy.  But I’ve also gotten really into a couple of new ones: The Blacklist (amazing!!), Hostages, and Betrayal.  I know, I watch way too much TV.  I discovered the new ones on demand while I was couch-ridden, and now I’m hooked!

Wanting– To create a bird bath like this.  I think it would be a great use of some of the old bricks from our pile!

08592cd5728449c04631f5dacfe431a1

Needing– To go through all of our mail.  It’s really piling up!

Feeling– Grateful for the possibility of a speedy recovery!  The original plan after my ankle surgery was to be in a hard cast for 4 weeks, without being able to bear any weight at all.  Then 4 more weeks in a walking boot.  But at my appointment last Monday, the doc said I was healing well, and that I will only need the hard cast for about 3 weeks.  Plus, I can start bearing 50% weight this week, then as much as I can tolerate next week!  And NO physical therapy needed!! Yippee!! That appointment was full of great news!

Clicking– This DIY spotted canvas tutorial.  I think it could be really cute (and really simple) in a chunky black or gold frame.

Be sure to check out Lauren’s page at http://siddathornton.blogspot.com/, where you can read about what she’s up to, as well as lots of other bloggers.  Have a great week everyone!! :)

By the Numbers

As an accountant (and as my father’s daughter), I tend to always need to put numbers to things. You can count on me to create a spreadsheet or a list for just about anything, and this house has been no different.  I won’t tell you the number of spreadsheets or lists I have (hint: it’s A LOT), but here are a few numbers that I want to remember.

5: number of days it took to negotiate the selling price with the bank

3: number of months we were under contract before closing

4: number of contractors we interviewed

What’s Your Fall Style?

Since it’s officially the first day of October and fall is upon us, I thought I’d talk a little bit about decorating for fall.  You’ve probably figured out by now that it is by far my favorite season, so I’m a little bummed that we don’t get to do any decorating this year.  But next  year…look out!!  We have 8 mantles and every last one of them is going to be decked out all season!!  Don’t worry, the porches, front door, dining room table, and bathrooms will be getting plenty of love too.  But first, I have to decide which direction I want to go in…

My first thought is to go with something a little more glamorous than just the usual sticks and leaves.  Here are a few that I love:

{1,2,3,4}

But then, there are lots of really lovely rustic set ups that I find just as pretty:

So I was of course overjoyed when I found this awesome blend of the two: A Rustic Glam Fall Mantle!

There’s still plenty of glitz in there, but it’s not overwhelming.  Here are a few other examples I found that mix glam and rustic beautifully:

Also worth checking out:  Melissa from The Inspired Room has been doing a Fall Nesting Series since the middle of September.  I’ve loved browsing her pictures.  Go take a peek for lots of fun tips and ideas!!

What’s your favorite fall decorating theme?  Are you more into the woodsy, rustic look…or do you like to doll it up a bit?  Have you found any inspiring ideas that mix the two?

A Peek at the Porch

Remember these sad porches?

13

They’ve been getting a lot of much needed love lately! First, the exterior was painted and the rotted eaves were removed, which gave them an instant face lift.

IMG_4041

Next, the rickety stairs to the basement were removed, and the brick walls were covered with cement to stabilize them.

Then, the floors of the first level were removed, as well as the cement steps leading up to the porch.  The brick foundation wall below the lower porch was knocked down, and then rebuilt, using some new bricks and some old from our brick pile.

So what does it look like now?  Have a peek!

A little better, right?  We have brand new, fully treated tongue and groove floor boards, and brand new safe, sturdy steps to the basement.

Do you remember how awful the soffits were looking back here?

Check them out now!

It makes a HUGE difference!  When I saw it for the first time, my jaw dropped.  I didn’t think they would ever look that good!  Also, I didn’t think I would ever get so excited about new soffits!  Amazing how your perspective changes with a project like this.

Right now, the upper porch is in the process of getting the same treatment.  The floors have been removed, and now a small portion has been replaced.  The rest will be replaced with matching tongue and groove boards this week.

It really is a huge transformation.  Everything is coming together!!  Look for updates later this week on our progress on the roof and gutters.

Don’t forget to check out The Remedy House sale tonight!  Lots of goodies coming your way! :)

The Sunday Currently, #6

Sorry I missed you last Sunday…I was busy recuperating and picking out paint colors!

Anyway, here’s what I’m up to on this gorgeous fall Sunday…

Currently:

Writing– A blog post to share all the latest house updates with you this week. Just finished taking some pictures…can’t wait for you to see!

Thinking– About doing a table makeover similar to this. I bought 2 little white side accent tables at Target (on sale for $7 each–who could resist?!?), and I’m thinking that painting the sides and legs gold would look awesome. I can just see them now styled with beautiful books and accessories, next to my pink couch! What do you think?

Wishing– My Fablue, Madison, a very happy birthday! Check out her blog full of delicious treats and exercise tips here.

Hoping– Y’all are ready for another sale from The Remedy House starting tomorrow! We’ve got some great things coming up!! (Also, be sure to check out The Remedy House blog!)

Wearing– Yoga pants and a t-shirt. Me, Charles, and my trusty scooter are making a run (er, scoot) to the grocery store. Wish me luck!

Loving– My new-found favorite work pants…NY and Company “pull on” pants. I found them before my surgery. They are absolutely perfect for fitting over a cast, and they are as comfy as sweatpants. Plus, no one knows the difference!! Amazing! I bought 3 pairs immediately! If you haven’t tried them, do it!

Wanting– Some ice cream.

Needing– To scratch my foot! It’s driving me crazy!

Feeling– Tired from tailgating all day at the State game, but happy to be getting a little energy back! (Bonus: the Pack stomped Central Michigan!!)

ClickingThis post by Jess Lively. Hopefully I can remember this tomorrow when I have a “case of the Mondays!” If, however, you do happen to have a case of the Mondays tomorrow, check this out. I’m going to go out on a limb and guarantee you’ll laugh!

Be sure check out Lauren’s Currently at siddathornton. (link updated.) Have a super week, and stay tuned for some big updates!!
