The Bathroom We Picked Was…

Remember this post on our options for the master bathroom?  Well, it’s official.  Drum roll… We decided on OPTION 3!!

Option 3

Most of you liked this one best too!  This option really does utilize the space the best.  Our plan was to tear out the kitchen ceiling (below the bathroom) as needed to install new plumbing, but since the bathroom floors can’t be saved anyway, we are just going to pull up the floors instead.  That way the kitchen is left alone.  We have been told to pick out finishes this week so that work can begin ASAP! YYYYYAAAAAYYYYY!!!!!

Here are a few inspiration photos for the bathroom.  You can see some of my ideas for the closet here and here.

I think a large mirror would look so elegant above the tub.

We are thinking of installing a shower that has two sides of tile and two sides of glass.  But I like the idea of doing a half wall in the shower so the tub has…um…a different view?  Awkward.

Our shower will be a little bigger than this, and I would love to have a bench in the shower.  No more awkward angles when trying to shave my legs! ;)

I would love for the built-in linen closet to have drawers at the bottom, then glass front cabinets above.

We are still undecided on all of the finishes, but we know that whichever vanity we choose has to have lots of storage and lots of counter space!

What do you think?  Did we make the right choice? What are your “must haves” in a bathroom?

Happy Birthday to Me!

Today I am 26. That’s weird to say. I refuse to think I’m in my “late twenties” yet, but I think this is my last year of avoiding that tag. If you would have told me 2, 5, 10 years ago that I would be living and restoring an historic home in the city I was born in, I would have laughed in your face. But here we are.

That’s right…I was actually born here. My family lived in a little podunk town not far from here, and there was no hospital (or at least not a good one…I’ve never gotten the whole story), so they drove over. A rare snowstorm kept them from leaving…which was a good thing because I was born that night. I hear that I was delivered with gold surgical gloves, which I think totally explains my passion for all things gold (makes sense, right?).

Four years earlier, Charles was born in the same hospital. And now it’s likely that our kids will be born in that hospital one day. It wouldn’t be so weird except for the fact that my family never lived in this town, and we moved an hour and a half away when I was just a few months old. Small world!

And just in case you were wondering, Leonardo DiCaprio turns 38 today (sorry Leo, I’m married), Demi Moore is 50, and both Mark Sanchez and Victor Cruz share my exact birth date. Happy birthday to us! :)

The Sunday Currently, #10

Today we are heading to brunch with both my family and Charles’ family to celebrate my birthday.  Then we’re going to take a trip over to the house to show everyone the progress that’s been made.  I can’t wait for them to see!

Since I’ll be out most of the day, I’m keeping this short and sweet!

Currently:

Thinking:  About how productive yesterday was! We picked out all of the lighting for our house (inside and out), bought paint, met with the electrician, and still found time to have a date night for my birthday. :)

Hoping: That NC State wins one conference game this season.  It’s not looking good…

Wearing: OPI’s “Berlin There Done That” gray nail polish.  I’m so happy fall has arrived so I can pull out my all time favorite!!

Loving: Old Navy this season! I gave up on Old Navy several years ago because everything just always looked and felt so cheap.  But after hearing several fashion bloggers praise the revamp, I decided to give it a try. And I’m so happy I did! Their prices are still great, but the quality has definitely gone up.  I bought this comfy sweater in 3 colors!  Next on my list, this vest!

Wanting: Dessert!

Feeling:  Delighted that we are getting close enough to being through with the house that we are picking out finishes!  You can see our guest bathroom choices here.  Yesterday we met with the local lighting store to pick out light fixtures for the entire house.  6 ceiling fans, 4 bathroom sconces, 2 bathroom vents, a chandelier for the foyer, a front porch light, and a new lantern for the lamp post at the street! Whew!

Clicking: #myfriendsaremarried.  A friend of a friend started it a while back, and I’ve loved keeping up with it.  Even though I’m married, I still find it hilarious!!

Check out Lauren’s blog to see what she and other bloggers are up to.  Have a fabulous Sunday and enjoy your week!! I’ll be back later this week with updates on our lighting choices and insurance solutions.  Stay tuned!

Quotable Friday

I have had a lot on my mind this week, and I felt like one quote just wasn’t enough.  So I picked two! :)

Whether you’re building a house, building a relationship, building a career, or whatever else, the best things really are worth the wait.  I don’t really buy into the idea that “good things come to those who wait.”  I’m more of a “good things come to those who hustle” kind of girl.  But there’s a difference between sitting back and waiting for things to happen to you, and waiting for the work you are doing to be complete.  And I just know that the extra months, the extra money, the extra stress, and the extra tears will all be worth it when we have a gorgeous home full of love in the end.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in everything going wrong (or at least not going right as planned) in your life.  It’s also easy to be so busy planning the future that you forget to enjoy the now.  I love this article on eliminating the “I’ll be happy when…” mindset.  The truth is that I have so many more blessings right now than I could have ever dreamed of.  From now on, I will make a conscious effort to choose joy, each and every day.

Have a happy weekend!! :)

Running the Option

We did it!  We made a big decision!

We met with our architect friend on Tuesday night to go over the plans he drew up for us.  He outlined 5 basic options, but really, he could have done 100.  The possibilities for this bathroom really are endless!

Here’s a look at the general space before adding any bathroom fixtures.

Check out this post for more on the closet.  The closet area is the same in all drawings.  The only decision we really have there is whether to do pocket doors or french doors.  As much as we love pocket doors, they can be a pain to install, so I think we have settled on skinny french doors that swing out. Maybe something similar to one of these?

Alright, let’s get down to business.  Here are the options.  Keep in mind that the tub, toilet, etc. can be turned in different directions, and the placement of sink basins, faucets, etc. can be adjusted.  These just give you the jist.  Also important to note–while we do plan to build a separate “water closet” for the toilet, we plan to do some sort of opaque glass, either in the door or above the door, to allow natural sunlight to reach all parts of the room.

Option 1: A glass and tile shower would be installed on the left, and the water closet would be on the right.  The tub would go in between the two (a tight fit, but it fits), and two linen closets would be added.  Both the shower and water closet dimensions would be around 2’10” x 5’8″.

option 1

Option 2-A: The glass and tile shower would be installed in the back right corner, and a water closet would take up the rest of the back of the room.  The approximate dimensions of the shower would be 3’4″ x 5’8″, and the water closet would be around 8’8″ x 3′.

Option 2A

Option 2-B: This option is the same as 2-A, except the tub and vanities have been switched.

Option 2B

Option 3:  This option is similar to Option 1, but the tub has been moved to the left wall.  This decreases our shower to about 3’3″ x 4’6″.  The space between the shower and water closet would be used for storage…possibly a bench under the window.

Option 3

Option 4: This would place the shower in the back right corner, and the tub would be somewhere along the back wall.  It could be centered under the window, or centered on the remaining wall.  There are endless possibilities with the placement of the tub.  We could also add some sort of storage in the back left corner.  The vanities would be split into two separate units.

Option 4

Which one do you think we picked?  Which is your favorite?
