History Lessons

It’s interesting the things you learn when you buy a historical home.  For example, our house was originally built by a contractor, which is why we have TWO original bathrooms instead of just one.  This was pretty much unheard of in 1902.  We also know that the house has only had 4 owners in its 112 years: the original builders; my husband’s grandparents, who bought the house in 1939; the previous owners, who bought the house in 2003; and us.

Taylor Gaylor House

One of the more interesting things I’ve learned is that the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) was actually begun in our living room by Mrs. Charles Taylor, the original builders’ wife.  This meeting was held on October 29, 1914.  Which means that the 100th anniversary of our local chapter is this October!

DAR

Although I am not yet a member of the DAR, I was asked a couple of weeks ago to host the 100th anniversary celebration meeting in October.  I’m so excited to host such a monumental occasion, and also very nervous about the state of our house!  I know that we will be all moved in, but having the house “show worthy” is questionable.

I now have 7 months to get things in order.  And by things, I mean hang wallpaper, get blinds, hang window treatments, finish painting, and get the rest of the furniture we need, at least for the downstairs.  So really, this is just my excuse to not wait to go ahead and get the things I want, right?!  ;)

Boy Office or Girl Office?

In planning the decor of the office, I’ve been bouncing back and forth lately.  We painted the office navy and I love love love it!  Seriously.  If you’re on the fence about doing dark walls….just do it!

But now I can’t decide if we should go with our original plan of a masculine space or try to brighten it up to fit the rest of the house.  So I’ve come up with two plans.

The constants: the large antique desk, the navy walls, and the white trim.  Neither of us work at home, so the office is more for leisure than actual work…at least for now.

 Option 1:

Untitled #3

This was our original idea to make the office somewhat of a “man cave.”  We’ve discussed having lots of leather, wood, and animal accents.  I think an oriental rug would help to keep the room traditional like the rest of the house, but layering a hide would make it a little more contemporary.  The added color doesn’t hurt either.

 Option 2:

Untitled #4

This definitely makes for a brighter space than Option 1.  The white, mint, and gold accents would help to lighten up the dark walls.  The colors would also tie in well with the rest of the house.  But it’s quite feminine, and nothing like what we had imagined.

So what’s your opinion?  Dark and masculine, or bright and feminine?

The Sunday Currently, #22

Happy Sunday!

Currently:

Reading– Jenna Lyons’ life lessons.  I think we could learn a lot from her, no matter the industry.

Writing– A guest post for another blog.  More on that later!

Thinking– I wouldn’t mind grabbing a glass of wine at Starbucks every now and then.

starbucks

Wishing– I could take the whole week off work to get this house in order!  It’s a bit overwhelming, and pretty much impossible to do a weekend at a time.

Hoping– That dry, sunny weather is here to stay!

LovingThis mantra lately.  Easier said than done, but it’s something to strive for.

Stress Less

WantingThis shirt.  It pretty much sums up how I feel about life.

Lemons

Needing– Another day in this weekend.

Feeling– Excited about some pretty fabulous guest bloggers I have coming up in the next couple of months!

Clicking– These lies that TV tells us.  Oh how true!  (But Friends is still my favorite show!)

Hop on over to Lauren’s blog to see what she and other bloggers are up to!

Have a super week! :)

A Spring In My Step

It’s here! It’s finally here! It is officially SPRING!!!

As a true lover of winter and cold weather, I’m usually not quite ready for spring to come around.  But this winter has been the worst.  Ever.  Just miserable.  So this year I’m welcoming spring with open arms!!

To kick off the season, here are a few of my spring favorites…

In Search Of

I’m on the hunt for the perfect table for our foyer.  Our foyer is quite substantial, and the previous owners even used it as a den.  The exact dimensions are 13′ x 21.5′.

Here’s a look at the room, in various stages.

And before you ask, we’re not sure if that rug is staying or going to live in another room.  It really just depends on how this room takes shape.  But the foyer was the only place clear enough to let it flatten out.

Charles and I both would like to put a large table in the middle of the room, with a few other pieces of occasional furniture sprinkled in here and there.  Maybe something like these.

As you can imagine as we near the end of our restoration, our furniture budget is pretty tight.  I’ve been scouring Craigslist and Facebook furniture pages for the right table, but no luck.  We don’t want just a round table that looks like the typical round dining table at your grandmother’s house.  It needs to feel special in some way…just like our house!

So if you come across one, give me a shout! :)
