Nursery Update

Welcome back, friends! I hope y’all had a wonderful Christmas break and are getting into the swing of 2018! We had a nice, fairly relaxing Christmas with family and even got to get away to the beach for a few days. Since then, we’ve been trying to get everything ready for our little bundle of joy to arrive in February.

Today I wanted to share a big update on all the progress we’ve made in Charlie’s nursery. Settle in, because this is gonna be a long one!

Here was our beginning list, in no particular order…

Patch holes in walls
Fix falling tiles on fireplace
Caulk trim & touch up paint
Fix claw marks in door (thanks, Sully)
Paint the top of the mantel
Change outlet covers to white
Hang drapes
Install closet system
Touch up paint on walls
Decorate

My goal is to have the nursery finished by February 1st, so I’m super happy with the progress we’ve made. Now it’s just about the fun stuff…decorating!

But let’s back up for a minute. While that list seems simple enough, it’s actually been a lot of work. Let me show you…

Please excuse the quality of some of these photos. A lot were snapped really quickly on my phone. (Is it considered poor taste to add an iPhone X to your baby registry? Asking for a friend.)

Before the custom closet could be installed, we had to remove our baseboards so it would sit flush with the wall. Since our baseboards are 12″ tall and have nothing behind them (our house has plaster walls throughout), we had to go back with sheetrock.

We used Closets by Design out of Raleigh and have been so pleased with them. The install took a full day, mainly because of the size of the cabinets and because nothing in our house is ever square or flush. Of course.

The next project was the dresser/changing table. I knew I wanted an actual dresser, and I knew I wanted it to be very large. Smaller furniture tends to get lost in our house, and the wall where the dresser would be going is 10′ tall and about 15′ wide. So after weeks of searching, my mom FaceTimed me to show me the perfect piece that she and my dad had found. It was the perfect size, and only $150!

The only problem was that it was not white. So being the amazing parents (and grandparents) that they are, Mom and Dad got to work on making this dresser just what I was dreaming of. Lots of sanding, lots of paint, lots of hours. This thing has 14 drawers. 14!! And they refinished every. single. one.

This kid is going to have so much storage!!

Charles has had a lot of little projects on his hands, and luckily we had some snow days that allowed him to be home a couple weeks ago. Side note: I’ve really hated feeling so useless during this process. Setting up a nursery is so fun until you realize all the things you aren’t supposed to do…no lifting, no painting, no sanding.

But back to Charles…pretty much everything on the above list was completed by him. But I did manage to do a little paint scraping on the trim! #woohoo

So, as of today, the nursery looks like this…

In my next post, I’ll share more about how I plan to decorate the rest of the nursery and the things we still need to buy. With the due date of February 23rd looming, it’s crunch time!

A few sources for those wondering…
Rug | Crib | Glider | Drapes | Crib Skirt | Giraffe
